New Music Guild Hosts Flutist Linda White and Pianist/Composer Eric Charnofsky
For its second concert set of the season The New Music Guild, Inc. will expand its venues with a concert at the First Congregational Church, 41 East Jefferson Street, Jefferson, OH 44047 (near Ashtabula, OH), at 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening January 30, 2016. Guest artists White and Charnofsky will also perform a concert at 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the organization's home base, Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Holy Apostles Parish, 421 Covington Street in downtown Youngstown. There will be a party and refreshments in honor of both musicians after this concert in the Church's Fellowship Hall. Admission to both concerts is free.
Linda White
Flutist Linda White leads a dynamic life as both performer and teacher and has also played in many of the major orchestras of Northeast Ohio. She performs regularly with classical guitarist Robert Gruca in the Gruca White Ensemble, ensemble-in-residence at The Cleveland Music Settlement. The duo's fresh approach combines classical, Latin, popular, and improvised music. An avid chamber musician White frequently premieres new works for the Cleveland Composers Guild at area venues. She often draws upon the wealth of wonderful musicians in metropolitan Cleveland to create interesting and eclectic programs. She teaches at The Music Settlement, where she also directs the Flautrageous Flute Choir and coordinates a chamber music program for adult amateurs. She trained at the University of Wyoming and the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Eric Charnofsky
Eric Charnofsky is a collaborative pianist, composer and music instructor. Originally from Los Angeles, he currently teaches at Case Western Reserve University, and has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He performed as orchestral pianist with The Los Angeles Philharmonic and The Cleveland Orchestra. A graduate of The Juilliard School of Music, where he majored in piano accompanying, Charnofsky also holds degrees in Piano and Composition from California State University at Northridge. He commercially recorded for the Albany and Capstone labels. His compositions have been performed in several major US cities, and in 2012 he received “Composer of the Year” honors from the Ohio Music Teachers Association. His radio program, “Not Your Grandmother's Classical Music,” airs Monday afternoons on Cleveland's WRUW-FM.

Program
The White/Charnofsky Duo will feature the Ohio premiere of Youngstown composer, Robert Rollin's Chicklet's Odyssey (2013), a large-scale piece commissioned by Pittsburgh flutist, Suzanne Levinson. Levinson requested a composition about her amusing and lively pet parrot, Chicklet. The five movements are: Affectionate Prologue, with canonic treatment showing the close relationship between the Levinson family and Chicklet; The Chase, in which the family pursues Chicklet to the highest point in their home; The Descent, Contrition, and Reconciliation, bringing the bird back into the family fold; Pranks, portraying the bird’s antics; and Playful Spirit, returning to themes from movements 2 and 4.
Rollin's Five Pieces for Flute and Piano on Legends of the Seneca Indians (1984) will also be played. Its publisher nominated it for the Pulitzer Prize and the Ohio Governor gave it a Special Recognition Award. The Native American legends were the work's main source material, but the composer also used some Seneca melodies and tunings.
Charnofsky's Two Pieces for Flute and Piano (1992-2001) will receive its Youngstown premiere. The first movement, the melancholic and reflective Lamentation, was composed first. Nearly a decade later the composer decided to write a companion piece to it as its diametric opposite. The new movement, the uplifting and spirited Jubilation, is in a short 3-part form that unfolds like a theme and variations and uses 10/8 meter and complex rhythms influenced by music of Copland, Stravinsky, and jazz.
The balance of the program includes two 20th-Century chestnuts: Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite (selections arranged by Léon Roques) and Francis Poulenc's gorgeous Sonata for Flute and Piano.
