YSU New Music Opens 2013-14 Season with Guest Pianist Avguste Antonov
The Youngstown State University New Music Society will host Texas pianist Avguste Antonov in a series of concerts Wednesday, October 23 (Butler Institute of American Art at 12:15 p.m., and Bliss Recital Hall at 8:00 p.m.) and Thursday, October 24 (Holy Apostles Church on Covington Ave. at 5:30 p.m.).
Avguste Antonov
Antonov was born in Bulgaria into a family of professional musicians, went to school in France, and then moved to the U.S. where he attended university. He specializes in the performance of 20th and 21st century music, and has premiered works by composers such as Carter Pann, Raina Murnak, Matthew Lewis, Robert Rollin, Matthew Saunders, Till Meyn, and Marc Parella. He has performed as soloist with the Alton Symphony, Tulsa Camerata, San Jose Wind Symphony, Trevecca Symphony Orchestra, Hardin-Simmons University Orchestra, Kansas City Medical Arts Symphony, and the University of Kansas Symphony and Wind Ensemble. This 2013-14 Season he will concertize in Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Kansas, California, and Washington. Currently Antonov is Artist in Residence at The Masters Touch School of Music in Grapevine, Texas, metropolitan Dallas.
New Music Society
The New Music Society concerts will include Antonov’s performances of two works by Carter Pann: Your Touch (which is the solo cadenza third movement from his Piano Concerto No. 1), and Rondo Capriccio “Rage over a Lost Pawn,” the third movement from Concerto Logic for piano and wind symphony. Pann studied at Eastman and the University of Michigan, and now teaches at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Antonov will also play two works by Dana Faculty member Robert Rollin: Blue Fantasy and Toccata. Pieces by two other local composers will be represented; Romance: Malaguena in a minor, by Richard Zacharias, a community member of the New Music Guild, Inc., and Cumulis Humilis, by senior composition major Samantha Hogan, a student of Rollin.
Other works to be represented are Gregory Hutter’s The Melancholy Rags, Book 1. Hutter graduated from the University of Michigan, studying with Michael Daugherty and William Bolcom among others. Bolcom’s influence can be found in the traditional ragtime style of Hutter’s collection. He currently teaches at DePaul University. Antonov will also play Dreams Before You Awake by William Vollinger, a prolific New York metropolitan area composer who teaches at Nyak College. At the Thursday Holy Apostles recital, Antonov will include two late and rarely heard pieces by Franz Liszt; Umstem: Sinistre, Disastro, and Nuages Gris.
Dana School of Music
Graduate student Sean Baran will present gifted and cosmopolitan composer Alexander Tcherepnin’s Bagatelles, Op. 5 for piano, a set of ten short pieces. Tcherepnin (1899-1977), scion of a large Russian family of composers, was extremely prolific and had parallel careers as a pianist and conductor. His sons established an electronic synthesizer company in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Senior Aaron Lockhart will play piano with Rachel Minto, flute in the world premiere of his Oblique Motions II. Clarinetist Chris Nutter and pianist Jerry Rezanka will premiere senior Ryan Cunningham’s composition Unexpected Journeys. Richard Zacharias will hear his All Right, Time to Go played by Dana Alumnae Natalie Sahyoun, violin and Alison Morris, piano. Undergrad composer Jesse Martin will premiere his Delicious Yellow Goo Variations 1 and 2. Martin composes for computer games and performs as a professional rock guitarist and composer.
