March 12th Annual Winter Concert with Sean Baran & Sylvia Games DuBos
The New Music Guild, Inc. will present its Winter Concert at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Holy Apostles Parish, 421 Covington St. in downtown Youngstown, at 3:00 pm, Sunday, March 12th, 2023. The Guild focuses on 20th and 21st Century music, but also highlights classical music and sponsors visits by guest composers and performers. The season culminates with the nationally recognized Annual May Festival that includes concerts and lectures as well as elementary and high school educational events.
The Sunday afternoon concert will feature two guest artists: pianist Sean Baran and cellist Silvia Games DuBos, playing music by classical and modern composers.
Youngstown pianist and organist Sean Baran is organist at Boardman United Methodist Church. A summa cum laude graduate of the Dana School of Music, he is resident artist at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland, PA. He is an officer for a number of music educational organizations, and has served on the executive committee of the American Guild of Organists, and as the Youngstown Symphony ensemble keyboardist.
Argentinian cellist, Silvia Games DuBos is currently principal cellist of the Washington, PA and Greenville Symphonies and was principal cellist of the Symphonies of Ohio University, Duquesne University, and the Symphony Orchestra of Lanus National University in Argentina. She is also Artistic Director of the ArsDocta International Music Festival. A committed educator, she has taught cello in Argentina, the US, Paris, France, Brazil. and Quito, Ecuador. She currently runs a large private studio in Pittsburgh, PA, and holds a Masters in Performance from Duquesne University.
The concert will open with performances by New Music Guild Coordinators, Gwyneth Rollin, violin and Robert Rollin, piano. They will together play Robert Rollin’s The Holidays, a reminiscence of the joys of sharing celebratory family meals and his Passover Songs, a setting of 2 folk melodies sung at the Seder. Rollin will perform his Seven Sound-Images on Seven Stanza By a Child, a setting of a poem by a young inmate of the Terezin Concentration Camp. Gains DuBos and Baran will perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s, Cello Sonata in D Minor. Op. 40, a mainstay of the 67cello repertoire and the word premiere of Rollin’s Spiritual Images. Baran will play Chopin’s Fantasie-Impromptu. Op. 66, George Crumb’s Dream-Images from Makrokosmos Volume 1, and Vincent Persichetti’s Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 22.
An after party with refreshments in honor of Shawn Baran and Silvia Games DuBos will take place at the Church basement fellowship hall immediately following the Sunday afternoon concert.
