Cleveland Opera Performs Free Staged Comic Opera with New Music Guild, Inc.

The Cleveland Opera will present Youngstown and Jefferson, Ohio staged and costumed performances of Susanna’s Secret, a chamber comedy guaranteed to make you laugh. Count Gil, a jealous husband, suspects his wife, Susanna, of flirting with another man. To his surprise, revealing Susanna’s secret leads him in a completely different direction.

The company includes Francisco X. Prado, baritone as Count Gill, Nicole Wong as Susanna, Wanda Sobieska, violin and viola, Jacek Sobieski, piano, and Dorota Sobieska, stage director.

The first concert will be 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at Jefferson Congregational Church (UCC), an attractive red brick church built in 1835. It is at 41 East Jefferson Street in Jefferson, Ohio. The intimate Sanctuary has beautiful acoustics.

The second concert will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday. April 28th at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Holy Apostles Parish, 421 Covington Street in downtown Youngstown. If you take Lincoln Avenue west from 5th Avenue on the YSU campus, it intersects Covington Street after about half a mile. The brown brick Art Nouveau church has an impressive steeple and will be on your right. It is a gorgeous acoustic space.

The concerts will open with chamber music performances by violinist Wanda Sobieska and pianist Patrick Wickliffe. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Sobieska belongs to the fifth generation of a family of musicians and musicologists. She has appeared as solo and chamber musician in the United States, Poland, and Canada. She regularly plays in many professional orchestras.

Sobieska is also a gifted arranger. Recent arranging engagements include commissions by the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and the English Symphony Orchestra. In 2009 she launched, a website dedicated to making much-needed sheet music available to working musicians. Featuring her own practical arrangements of commonly requested pieces available for free while adhering to standards of high quality, the site has a surprisingly large following worldwide.

Pianist Patrick Wickliffe studied with distinguished teachers at the Cleveland Institute, Oberlin Conservatory, and Kent Sate University. In addition to a career as pianist and accompanist, he has worked in the church music field for the past ten years and currently serves as Coordinator of Music Ministry at Chagrin Falls’ Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church.

The performances are free and open to the Northeast Ohio community. Both churches will sponsor receptions in honor of the performers.
